NEVER GOT THE SHOT: Last weekend’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) event at Iowa Speedway was dubbed an “extreme” double duty weekend for Joey Logano as the Sprint Cup Series veteran was attempting to fly back and forth between Pocono Raceway and Iowa to compete in the event. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had her own plans. After getting to practice that car on Friday and qualify it on Saturday, the race was postponed until Sunday due to rain, meaning Logano had to forgo his shot behind the wheel. Logano gave way to Ryan Blaney, who ended up finishing ninth.
ANOTHER TRACK, AGAIN DEFENDING WINNER: Following his nine-win season last year, Logano once again comes into the weekend as the defending race winner. Logano led 31 of the 125 laps in last year’s NNS event at Michigan en route to the victory. Logano has raced at Michigan four times in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, finishing in the top-10 on every occasion.
LAST FOR A FEW WEEKS: The Michigan event will be the last NASCAR Nationwide Series event on the schedule for Logano until Daytona in early July. AJ Allmendinger will race the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford at Road America next week, while Brad Keselowski will be back behind the wheel of the No. 22 at Kentucky Speedway.
IMPRESSIVE STATS: Even though he’s competed in only four NASCAR Nationwide Series events this season, Logano has an impressive average finish of 2.5 in his four races this year. With his four top-five finishes this season, Logano now has 57 top-fives (and 90 top-10s -79 percent) in 114-career starts, meaning he has finished in the top-five in exactly half of all of his Nationwide Series events.

YOU ARE AGAIN THE DEFENDING RACE WINNER? DOES THAT PUT ANY ADDITIONAL PRESSURE ON YOU?

“I don’t think it does. I don’t let it put any pressure on my even if people want to. Last year was last year and this year is this year. We are looking to go out there and win each and every race we enter with the Discount Tire Ford Mustang. I never really ran that well at Michigan before last year and I was able to learn some things, which hopefully will help me out for this season. But I don’t think about last year much. I just want to keep doing what we are doing, which is going out there and running strong and running up front each and every week.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR NNS STATS THUS FAR?

“I don’t really pay much attention to stats, but when you look at the numbers, it’s something that you take a lot of pride in. This is not an easy sport and you really have to work hard at what you do. So to be able to look back and think that you have finished top-five in half of the events you’ve run is pretty remarkable. That just goes to show the teams I’ve been able to be with and a lot of that goes back into the hard work all of them have done over the years.”

ON A HOT STREAK: Joey Logano enters the race at Michigan this weekend riding a bit of a hot streak in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Logano finished 10th last weekend at Pocono Raceway, marking his third-straight top-10 finish (fourth if you count the Sprint All-Star race) and his sixth top 10 in his last 10 races.
DADDY TOM: One of the most well-known fathers in the garage area, Tom Logano has been with his son throughout his entire racing career. A garbage man from the Northeast, Tom Logano got his son interested in racing after buying him a go-kart at an early age despite not having a racing background himself. Since that point, the two have worked together throughout Logano’s racing career before the youngster was signed to run in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS). In fact, in just his third Nationwide Series start, coming on Father’s Day weekend, the younger Logano scored his first NNS win, making him the youngest NNS winner in NASCAR history and giving his dad the best Father’s Day gift of his life.
MICHIGAN FEAST OR FAMINE: Michigan International Speedway has been both a good and bad track for Logano over the course of his Sprint Cup Series career. In eight starts at the track, Logano has three top-10 finishes, all of which came early in his career. Last year, Logano was running in the top 10 in both Cup Series races at Michigan before being involved in accidents.
FORD RACING DAY: This coming Thursday, Logano and the rest of the Ford Racing family of drivers will visit the Ford headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., for Ford Racing Day. As part of the visit, the drivers to tour the facility, partake in several activities and sign autographs for Ford employees.
POINTS RACE: Logano moved up two spots in the point standings to 16th after Pocono. He’s now just 26 points out of the Chase.

YOU ARE RUNNING WELL RIGHT NOW, HOW DO YOU KEEP THAT GOING WEEK TO WEEK?

“The best teams are able to run up front each and every weekend. That is where we need to get this Shell-Pennzoil team. I think we need to get to the point to where we unload the car and start the race closer to the front, so we have a better shot at the win and at top fives. We have been getting some good finishes this year, but it seems like we are always fighting back from a problem or fighting from the back of the field. If we can get to where we are a little better at the start of the weekend, I think you will see a whole different outcome.”

HOW DO YOU GET TO THAT POINT?
“All that will just come with time. The thing I need to keep telling myself is that we are still only 14 races into this new relationship. (Crew chief) Todd (Gordon) and myself have only been together for 14 races and I’ve only been with Penske Racing for 14 races. We’ve come a long way, but we are still working and learning new things about each other every single weekend. With time, that will come. I think we’ve done pretty good so far, but we want to keep it going. You never want to come to the track and stop learning. We still are for sure.”

EXTREME DOUBLE DUTY: It’s nothing new when Joey Logano, or his Sprint Cup Series teammate Brad Keselowski, pulls double duty between the Cup and Nationwide Series. But this weekend will be a little different. Logano will be pulling double duty between the Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono and the Nationwide Series race at Iowa. The plan calls for Logano to practice and qualify his Cup car in Pocono, then fly to Iowa to compete in final practice before heading back to Pocono. On Saturday, he will compete in both Sprint Cup Series practices before heading to Iowa for qualifying and the NNS race.
BACK IN VICTORY LANE: Logano won his first Nationwide Series race of the season last weekend at Dover. The win marked several significant accomplishments for Logano. First, it was his 19th-career Nationwide Series win, good enough for 16th all-time. It also extended his streak of six-straight years with at least one NNS race victory. The win was his first for team owner Roger Penske, first for Ford and the 199th Nationwide Series win for Ford Racing. It was also Logano’s third-straight win at the “Monster Mile,” matching his accomplishment set at Kentucky Speedway, when he won at that track three-straight times.
OWNER’S POINTS: The victory in Dover allowed Logano to bring the No. 22 Discount Tire team within eight points of second-place in the Nationwide Series owner’s point standings.
FORMER WINNER: Even though Logano has never raced in the Nationwide Series at Iowa Speedway, he is a former winner at the track. He won the K&N Pro Series East vs. West race at Iowa in 2007, beating Kevin Harvick for the win.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING THE RACE IN IOWA?

“I’m a racer and I love to race. I always tell people that. Any opportunity that I get to race I’m going to take that chance and do it. It’s just what I love to do. I know originally Ryan Blaney was supposed to run the event, but since he is running full-time in the Truck Series this year for Brad, he’s got a race that night. So I have the opportunity to do it and I’m going to make the most of it. We’ve have a good start of the season with me and the No. 22 guys with four top-fives and a win. So hopefully, we can just continue to keep that streak going in Iowa.”

HOW TOUGH WILL THE WEEKEND DOUBLE DUTY BE?

“It’s going to be tough for sure, but we have a plan that will help me get as much rest as possible. I’ll get a chance to rest and debrief and change on the plane rides between Pocono and Iowa each night. But when I’m in Pocono, I’m going to be focused on my Shell-Pennzoil Ford. When I’m in Iowa, I’m going to be focused on my Discount Tire Ford. It will all work out just fine. The ultimate goal is to go out there and win both races this weekend and I think we will have a shot at it for sure.”

LOOKING TO GO BACK-TO-BACK: Joey Logano enters the Pocono Raceway weekend as the defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race winner at the track. Last season, Logano earned the pole, led a race-best 49 laps and passed his childhood mentor, Mark Martin, with just five laps to go, to earn his second-career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory.
SPEED DEMON: Two of Logano’s five career Sprint Cup Series pole positions have come at Pocono Raceway. He earned the pole in the second race of 2011 and again in the first race at the track last season, where he also set a track qualifying record.

HOW DOES IT FEEL GOING BACK AS THE DEFENDING WINNER?

“It always a good thing when you go to the track and you feel like people are going to look at you as one of the guys to beat. And with the way our Shell-Pennzoil team has been running as of late, I feel like we are going into each weekend now as a threat to run up front and a threat to win the race. Plus it’s Pocono. Some people don’t seem to like this place, but I’ve always felt like it was one of my better tracks. A lot like Dover, I feel like I know what it takes to be good there and what I need out of the car to get the most out of it.”

DHOW HIGH IS YOUR CONFIDENCE RIGHT NOW?
“I don’t really think my confidence has ever really wavered much. I feel like this team has been strong all year long, even when we went those few weeks without our regular guys at the track. You can pinpoint a few races where we were off, but a lot of the bad finishes we’ve had are the result of things we can’t control, like getting caught up in a wreck or having engine issues. I feel like if we eliminated those and some of the mechanical issues we had early, this team should be in the top 10 easily in the points. So we just need to keep doing what we are doing. The confidence is there. The team is there. We just need to put it together every week.”

AT THE SPEED OF HERTZ: This weekend, The Hertz Corporation, one of the world’s leading car rental and transportation companies, will make their debut as sponsor of the No. 22 Ford Mustang and driver Joey Logano. Hertz will serve as a primary sponsor for seven races on the No. 22 Ford Mustang as well as the fall race hosted at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Sprint Cup Series.
4, 3, 2…: Since making his season- and Penske Racing-debut in the NASCAR Nationwide Series just a few weeks ago at Talladega Superspeedway, Logano has been able to rack up some good finishes behind the wheel of the No. 22 Hertz Ford Mustang. In fact, Logano has finishes of fourth, third and second in his three races already this year. He has also helped move the No. 22 up in the Owner’s Standings from sixth to third since he took over the ride.
THREE-FOR-THREE? Logano comes into the Dover race weekend as the winner of the last two Dover Nationwide Series events. Logano won both races at the high-banked, half-mile track last season, leading a dominating 338 of the 400 laps over the two races. Logano also has a pair of poles at the track, as well as two runner-up finishes.
MONSTER MEANING: “The Monster Mile,” the nickname that describes Dover, is close to Logano’s heart. Logano made his much anticipated Nationwide Series debut just a week after his 18th birthday in 2008 at Dover to much fanfare. In that race, Logano started ninth, raced up front all day long and eventually finished sixth.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT DOVER?

“It really it probably one of my favorite tracks. It’s like a grown up Bristol. They don’t drive the same necessarily, but they are very similar in their approach and in the way that you have a lot of speed and g-load through the corners. I’ve just always been really good at the track and taken to it well. I would say it’s one of my favorite tracks that we go to and I’ve been fortunate enough to have some pretty good success there. I just feel like I know what I need in a car to get me around the track.”

STILL SEARCHING FOR THAT FIRST WIN THIS YEAR. DOES IT COME THIS WEEKEND?

“I think we are getting closer and closer. The more I run with the guys and the team and the more I work with (crew chief) Jeremy Bullins, the more of a chemistry we are building. And that’s what it’s going to take to get a win. You need to have that chemistry. We have some fast Fords; we just need to put it all together. If we can do it anywhere, I think this weekend will give us a good shot. I’m looking forward to it for sure.”

NOT WANTING TO LEAVE CHARLOTTE: Joey Logano might not want to leave the friendly confines of Charlotte Motor Speedway to head to Dover this weekend. Over the last two weeks, Logano had found some serious success on the track. Logano finished second in the All-Star race at Charlotte two weekends ago and then followed that up with a third-place finish in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at CMS and a fifth-place finish in the Coca-Cola 600.
THE BOYS ARE BACK: Often before the start of Sprint Cup Series races, the Dropkick Murphys song “The Boys Are Back” is played over the loud speakers. This weekend, that song will be apropos for Logano, who will get his Crew Chief, Car Chief and lead Engineer back this weekend. They come back following a three-week suspension.
A LITTLE TESTING: Logano and his No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil team spent a day this week testing their road course program at Virginia International Raceway in an open test session at the 3.27-mile road course. Both Logano and his Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski, along with the Penske Racing Nationwide Series teams, took part in the test.
CLIMBING BACK IN THE POINTS: Despite a fifth-place finish in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway last weekend, Logano remains 19th in the series’ point standings. However, he did make up significant ground in the points. And though the 23-year-old is 19th in the standings, he sits just 37 points outside of the Chase cutoff and only 30 points out of 12th position.

ARE YOU EXCITED TO GET TODD GORDON BACK THIS WEEKEND?

“I am excited to get Todd back at the track. It’s been tough just talking with him away from the track and seeing him at the shop. But the guys that filled in during the time he and everyone else was out did a great job. I think we really made the best of the situation and I don’t think we really missed a beat and that was obvious the last couple of weeks in Charlotte. But it will be nice having Todd back at the track for sure. I’m ready for things to get back to normal and focus on winning some of these races.”

DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE RIDING A HOT STREAK?
“Well, anytime that you are running good and getting good finishes, it helps pump the team up and helps pump you up as a driver. But I feel like we have been running well all year long, we just don’t have the finishes to show for it. I think we have only had a couple of races where we actually ‘missed it.’ But we will take the last couple of weeks and keep going with it.”

22 TEAM AND LOGANO DEFENDING WINNER: Based upon the last two NASCAR Nationwide Series races at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the No. 22 Discount Tire team has a pretty good shot at taking the checkered flag in this weekend’s History 300. Logano’s Penske Racing teammate, Brad Keselowski, is the defending winner of the History 300. Logano, who will drive the No. 22 this weekend, won the last Nationwide Series event at Charlotte Motor Speedway, coming in October.
MOVING ON UP: Since taking over the wheel of the No. 22 Discount Tire car at Talladega Superspeedway, Logano has moved the team up three spots in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Owner’s point standings. Following the Richmond event, the team was sixth in the Owner’s Standings. On the strength of Logano’s second-place finish in Talladega and fourth-place finish in Darlington, the team now sits third in Owner’s points.
CHARLOTTE A FAVORITE? One of the questions Logano is asked the most at various Q&A sessions always is “what’s your favorite track.” And while his standard answer is “the next one” Logano really loves Charlotte. In nine-career NNS races at Charlotte, Logano has one win, four top-fives and five top-10s. He also has a pole award, which came in the History 300 last year.

WHAT MAKES YOU GOOD AT CHARLOTTE?

“I really don’t know what I like about the track so much, but it has always suited my driving style. It’s just a fun track to drive. You can work the top, you can work the bottom and both lanes can be really fast depending on how your car is set up. I was fortunate enough to get to win the last Nationwide race here last year and I learned a lot of things that day. So I’m excited to go back with the 22 team and see how it’s different and see how fast we can make this Discount Tire Ford Mustang. We’ve got two races under our belt together, so I’m thinking this could be our breakout weekend together.”

HOW TOUGH IS THE COMPETITION THIS YEAR IN THE NATIONWIDE SERIES?

“The last few years, the competition has really ramped up. You have a lot of good Cup Series drivers that come over and run. Kyle (Busch) is always fast. (Kevin) Harvick and Kasey (Kahne) are always fast. But you have a lot of really good, really fast regulars now that can win races every weekend. Sam (Hornish Jr.) has really been good this year and he and Greg Erwin can win a race on any weekend. So the competition is tough and makes winning these Nationwide Series races even harder.”

STATS SAY CHARLOTTE THE BEST: Logano’s stats tell the tale of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Statistically, Charlotte Motor Speedway is Logano’s best track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. In eight races there, he’s earned five top-10 finishes. His average finish of 10.1 is his personal best of all the tracks on the circuit and it’s also the best of all current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers.
SECOND-PLACE ALL-STAR: Logano finished second in last weekend’s All-Star event at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the best he has ever finished in the special event. Logano had the fifth-best average over the course of the first four segments and then drove from fourth to second over the final 10 laps.

HOW TOUGH IS 600 MILES?

“It’s pretty tough. A lot of people will ask if it’s hard to stay focused but it’s really not. If you lose focus, you will wreck. But when you get out of the car on Sunday night after 600 miles, your body can sure feel it. But we are all drivers and we prepare for this and we train for this. Dover and Bristol can be a little more physically demanding and Talladega and Daytona can be a little more mentally demanding, but overall, this is definitely one of the toughest races that we run all year long.”

DO YOU LIKE RACING AT HOME DURING THESE TWO WEEKS?

“I mean we all love being able to go home and sleep in our own beds, but the weekend also brings with it a lot of appearances and requests for time and such. But you just go along with it. It’s really cool to come to the track and see the guys on the team have their wives and girlfriends with them and to see the guys at the shop who normally don’t get to come to the track come out and see everyone. That makes you want to win the race even more. Victory Lane celebrations at Charlotte are about as good as they can get.”

Hi my name is Mike and I am a huge Joey Logano fan. I have been a fan ever since his first nationwide start in 08. Ive been to the Watkins Glen many times and went to Michigan last summer. Ive gotten Joey's autograph four different times and he is great with the fans. I just thought I would get involved with the forum because it seems pretty cool.

THE NEWS & NOTES

WINNING A REQUIREMENT: Joey Logano will race in his third NASCAR Sprint Cup Series All-Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend. Logano qualified for the event by winning his second-career Sprint Cup Series race last season at Pocono Raceway. Logano won the pole, led the most laps and passed his childhood idol, Mark Martin, to grab the victory.
A SERIES-BEST AVERAGE: Of all drivers entered and eligible for this weekend’s All-Star race, Logano has the best career average finish in the event. In his two previous starts, Logano owns finishes of eighth (2009) and third (2010), giving him a 5.5 average finish in the special event.
FAN VOTE WINNER: While Logano wasn’t eligible to race in the All-Star race his freshman season on the circuit, he made the main event by winning the Sprint Fan Vote after finishing fifth in the Sprint Showdown race.
SPECIAL PAINT SCHEME: As is a normal occurrence in the Sprint All-Star race, Logano will carry a special paint scheme for the event. His car will transform from the regular yellow and red to a primarily yellow car highlighting the Pennzoil sponsorship of the No. 22 machine. The same paint scheme will run on Logano’s Ford Fusion next week as well in the Coca-Cola 600.

HOW MUCH FUN IS THE ALL-STAR RACE?

“It’s great. I mean it is kind of like the Unlimited at the beginning of the year, but this just feels different. This does feel like an All-Star event for sure, like you see with the NFL or NBA. It’s at night, right here at the home track for all of the teams, with a crazy format and a go-for-broke type of mentality. In a way, you can use it for a test session for the 600, but everyone comes out here thinking about one thing and that’s winning the race.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE RACE FORMAT?

“They did a good job at coming up with a format this year that is going to be more conducive to better racing. I know they have been messing with it over the years to try and make it the best possible race they can. This year, the big question will be pit strategy and when to come in, when you take tires and such. I know we have already started talking about it. You always see some different stuff happen in the All-Star race and I’m sure this year will be no different.”
