Joey Logano started the Showtime Southern 500 from the 17th position. Logano’s car was tight, however was still fast and ran in the top 15 for the majority of the race.

The Home Depot Toyota was in the 13th position when the second caution of the race waved on lap 34 with the only issue being a slight tight condition in the center of the turns. The team elected to make only minor adjustments thinking that the track would free up as the race continued.

The tight-handling issue continued to be a problem throughout the next 100 laps so the team elected to get a little more aggressive with chassis adjustments on the next two rounds of pit stops, adjusting the wedge, track bar and air pressure in an effort to give Logano more forward drive through the turns. With the car having more front grip it allowed Logano to get more aggressive and he moved into the top 10 by lap 207. He was in the 10th position when the sixth caution of the race waved on lap 221.

During the restart on lap 225, Logano got a little loose and was shuffled a handful of positions back to 15th place. In an effort to help with the loose-handling issue the team made some air pressure adjustments during the seventh caution period on lap 231. Logano was in the 15th position when racing resumed on lap 236.

On Lap 238 while battling for position with the number 9 of Marcos Ambrose, the two made contact, sending Logano for a spin towards the inside wall. The incident occurred coming off turn four, when Ambrose cut down on the exit of turn four. Logano went to the garage area for repairs.

The Home Depot Racing team made repairs to the 20 car, and sent the car back out on the track on lap 288. Joey Logano would finish the race in the 35th position. It is Logano’s worst finishing position at the Darlington Raceway. Logano is now in the 25th position in the driver standings.

Next week it’s onto the Dover International Speedway for the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks. In four starts at Dover, Logano has an average finish of 17.5.
