Joey Logano Kansas Sprint Cup Race Preview
Joey Logano will only be making his third career start at Kansas Speedway in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car this weekend, and only his second behind the wheel of the Home Depot Toyota. The team is looking to put last year’s race behind them and build off last weekend’s top-five finish. Last year, it was just one of those races for The Home Depot Team – if it could go wrong it did. Logano started from the 18th position, had several issues throughout the race and ran out of fuel on the final lap to finish 28th in the Price Chopper 400.
Logano and The Home Depot Team gained two positions in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver point standings following their third-place finish last weekend at Dover International Speedway. Logano moved back into the top 20 in points and is just 26 points behind Kasey Kahne in 19th and 56 points back from Dale Earnhardt Jr., in 18th. It was Logano’s fourth top-five finish of the 2010 season, and second in the past two weeks. Logano and the No. 20 Team also earned a fourth-place finish in Richmond two weeks ago.
The No. 20 Home Depot Team is taking chassis #278 for Logano this weekend in an attempt to earn back-to-back top-five finishes. This is the chassis Logano drove to a fourth-place finish at Richmond two weeks ago. The back-up chassis is once again #272 which has competed in three races in 2010: Chicagoland (18th) the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway (16th) and in June at Michigan (10th).
Logano will participate in the Tom Murphy Memorial Golf Classic on Thursday on behalf of Sprint, which has raised nearly $4 million for charity. The tournament will be played at The National Golf Club of Kansas City, located in Parkville, Mo. Net proceeds from the tournament will benefit several charities including the American Red Cross, Victory Junction Kansas City and the NASCAR Foundation.
Logano will compete in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race this weekend at Kansas Speedway on Saturday in the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing entry and defend his 2009 race win at the 1.5-mile track. His statistics in the NNS Series are remarkable this season as he has collected 18 top-10 finishes in 19 starts this season in addition to five poles (most recently last weekend at Dover) and one win.
Logano quotes on Kansas:
“Last week was huge for the entire Home Depot Team. We struggled in qualifying a bit, but on Saturday we continued to make improvements on the car and had a great race on Sunday. We’ve had two top-five finishes in last three weeks, but wrecked at Loudon. We know we can run well, now it’s about consistency. We have some good tracks coming up for us, so we should finish up the season strong.”
“Kansas is sort of a question mark on the schedule. I’ve only ran there twice in the Cup car, and only once with Zippy (crew chief Greg Zipadelli) and the No. 20 crew. And last year was just one of those races you’d like to forget. But we have some momentum going and hopefully we will carry that with us this weekend.”
