The weekend at Kansas City was not what The Home Depot Team was looking for with just seven races remaining on the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. Despite the team’s efforts during the scheduled 267-lap race, it could not get the handling of the No. 20 Toyota Camry to driver Joey Logano’s liking. Long green-flag runs coupled with the ill-handling car left the team two laps down to the leader in the 29th position when the checkered flag waved.
The schedule for the weekend had practice and qualifying on Friday, and Logano turned a time that earned him the 20th position for the start of the Hollywood Casino 400. The green flag waved under a sun-filled sky without a threat of rain for the first time in weeks for the series. Logano complained of an extremely loose race car during the first run and was 27th when the first caution flag waved on lap 19. He brought The Home Depot Toyota down pit road for a wedge adjustment, track bar adjustment, fuel and tires. Racing resumed on lap 23 with Logano in 25th. The No. 20 Toyota was now too tight for Logano in the center of the turns and off the corners following the adjustments and made the first of several green-flag pit stops on lap 65. The leader eventually passed Logano on lap 76 to put him a lap down. The yellow flag was finally displayed on lap 83 for debris.
The team adjusted on the car during the pit stop on lap 86, but much like the second run of the day it was now extremely tight. The second round of green-flag stops occurred between laps 129 and 135. Unfortunately the leader once again got around Logano on lap 136 putting him a second lap down in the 29th position. Through the final 100 laps of the race the car was racier for Logano and he told the team he took off better on new tires, but it would get tight during the run. He was now running top-15 lap times but it was too late due to the laps lost to the leader earlier in the race. With several cars in the same position as Logano, he was running in the 26th position with 20 laps remaining. The No. 24 car brought out the final caution with three laps remaining when the engine blew and set up a green-white-checkered finish. When the green flag waved for the shootout Logano was in the 25th position but the No. 47 car made it three wide and drifted up into The Home Depot Toyota causing heavy damage to the left side of the car. Logano was able to limp the damaged car home in the 29th position.
Logano now sits 23rd in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver standings following the Kansas Speedway race. The team races in its backyard this weekend as the series returns to Logano’s favorite track on the circuit, Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Bank of America 500 airs on Saturday night, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC television and PRN radio.
