Joey Logano and The Home Depot Team had a fast Toyota Camry on Sunday despite severe damage to the car. The team recovered from three laps down to finish 24th and on the lead lap in a race filled with two-car tandems and several incidents as a result.
Logano started the 188-lap race in the 35th position with teammate Kyle Busch starting just one spot ahead of him. The pair had practiced together on Friday and the game plan was set for the duo to draft together throughout the race. With Logano’s Home Depot Toyota glued to the rear bumper of the No. 18 Toyota, the tandem was able to maneuver to the front by lap 30 with Busch leading on lap 33. The two Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teams decided to pit together on lap 66, but trouble befell the No. 20 Team. The car of Trevor Bayne slowed dramatically in front of Busch coming to pit road and as Busch checked up so he didn’t hit Bayne, Logano dove low to avoid Busch. Unfortunately contact was made between teammates and Logano slid across the pavement but kept the car off the wall. As he was limping the car to pit road, the left front tire blew out causing significant damage left front of the car. The team remained in the pits for three laps repairing the damaged Toyota.
Racing resumed on lap 72 with Logano in the 39th position and three laps down to the leader. The Home Depot car was the only car on the track that wasn’t on the lead lap. When the caution flag was displayed on lap 79, the team received NASCAR’s free pass and was now just two laps down. Despite the damaged car, Logano pushed Tony Stewart to the lead on lap 101 and received another lap back after a multi-car incident on lap 104. Now just one lap down, the team was hopeful it would be back on the lead lap if one additional caution flag waved. It didn’t have to wait long, as on lap 121 NASCAR waved the yellow flag for debris and the team was now back on the lead lap and in the 33rd position.
Logano’s teammate Busch had been involved in another incident, so Logano continued to work with Stewart. Logano pushed him to the top spot on lap 136, except this time Logano was scored in second. With 30 laps remaining in the race the Stewart-Logano tandem was still running in the top 10. Logano pitted on lap 163 and partnered up with teammate Denny Hamlin who was also still on the lead lap. Unfortunately, The Home Depot Team’s troubles were not quite over. The No. 22 and No. 47 cars wrecked on lap 173 and Logano was hit in the right rear by the No. 42 car that was trying to avoid the wreck. The rear quarter panel of The Home Depot Toyota was now sitting on top of the deck lid, so Logano came down pit road for repairs.
Logano remained on the lead lap and dropped to the rear of the field to pair back up with teammate Hamlin for the final two lap shootout. The pair was unable to stay together and Logano crossed the stripe in the 24th position. His teammates Hamlin and Busch finished eighth and 33rd respectively.
Logano and The Home Depot Team head to Martinsville, Va., next weekend. The Home Depot colors will be replaced for one week by the green and white of JGR partner Interstate Batteries. The race will be broadcast on ESPN television and MRN Radio on Sunday, October 30 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
