Joey Logano AAA 400 Results
The Home Depot Team and Joey Logano were making progress on Sunday in the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway, but damage to the No. 20 Camry coupled with long, green-flag runs led to Logano falling laps down to the leader and finishing in the 29th position.
“The car was really loose and we didn’t have any grip through the first part of the race,” said Logano. “We started making progress on the handling and I hit the outside wall and tore the car up pretty good. We tried to stay out to try and get our lap back, but after the damage the car was unbelievable loose and undrivable. The long runs without a caution made it hard to make up time when you start in the back that the leader was in your mirror fast. Tough day that’s for sure.”
Logano started the 400-mile race from the 33rd position and was in the 28th spot when the second caution of the day waved on lap 19. The car was already loose on entry into the corners so crew chief Greg Zipadelli called Logano down pit road to add a spring rubber to the left rear and fit The Home Depot Toyota with fresh tires. Zipadelli knew NASCAR was calling a competition caution at lap 40, but wanted to work on the car’s handling early. Racing resumed on lap 22 with Logano in the 34th position and he was back up to 28th when the competition yellow waved. Logano pitted for right-side tires and fuel and restarted from the 23rd spot on lap 45.
Logano began to drop back and struggled with an overall lack of grip in the car. He was passed by the current leader Carl Edwards on lap 100 and made a green-flag stop on lap 111 for tires and an adjustment while running 28th. When the caution flag finally waved on lap 137 there were only 21 cars on the lead lap. Logano was able to get in position for the lucky dog just before the caution flag waved on lap 180 and was back on the lead lap at the midpoint of the race.
Logano again began to make his way back through the field and in the top 20, but hit the outside wall on lap 245 and damaged the right side of The Home Depot Toyota. The team made repairs during the next caution period and decided to remain on the track when rain brought out the caution again just 10 laps later on lap 256. Logano was in the lucky dog position to get back on the lead lap, but a brush with the 56 car caused fender damage that again loosened up the car too much. A long, green-flag run followed and Logano dropped another lap down to the leader. He continued to battle an ill-handling car over the remaining 100 laps and finished the race in the 29th position. Logano’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin finished sixth and 18th respectively.
Logano now sits 22nd in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver standings heading into next weekend’s race at Kansas Speedway. The Hollywood Casino 400 airs on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN television and MRN radio.
