Joey Logano 2010 Season Recap

Joey Logano and The Home Depot Team finished up the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season 16th in the standings, four spots higher than Logano’s rookie season. Over the 36-week schedule, Logano and the team earned one pole award, seven top-five and 16 top-10 finishes. He more than doubled his top-10 finishes from his rookie campaign and accrued 394 more points in 2010 than he did in 2009.

Logano and The Home Depot Team had been one of the most competitive teams over the closing 10 races of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, building momentum for 2011. Unfortunately, Logano was spun during the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway and relegated to a 39th-place finish. Prior to Homestead, the team had earned five consecutive top-10 finishes and was well on its way to a sixth before the incident on lap 140.

Aside from his duties behind the wheel of The Home Depot Toyota, Logano competed in 25 of the 35 NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2010. Logano finished the season eighth in the overall driver standings despite the limited schedule. His eight pole positions were more than any other driver in the series and he collected the award at the season-ending banquet in Miami on Monday. Over the 25 races, he earned two wins, 15 top-five and 24 top-10 finishes.

Logano will not have a typical off season; in fact the 20-year-old driver is spending the Thanksgiving holiday overseas in Japan as a guest of his team’s manufacturer Toyota. Aside from meeting with Toyota officials and fans, Logano will also be testing and driving one of his Home Depot cars. NASCAR competitor David Reutimann is also making the trip with Logano.

Greg Zipadelli, crew chief of the Home Depot car since its foray into the sport, continues to have impressive statistics in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Over the course of his 12 years atop the pit box for Tony Stewart and Joey Logano, Zipadelli has two championships, 34 victories, 11 poles, 139 top-five and 230 top-10 finishes.

Joey Logano quotes on the 2010 season:

“Obviously I am extremely disappointed with the way the last race ended, but up to that point we were headed for another top-10 run. We’ve had a roller coaster of a year, but toward the end of the season we really started to hit our stride. Over the summer months when it became clear that we weren’t going to make The Chase, we set our own goals of working on consistency over the final 10 races. Consistency is what gets you into the playoffs. I think we showed everyone, including ourselves that The Home Depot Team has what it takes to make a run at The Chase next year.

“We started out the season really strong, but we struggled over the summer months and that will be something we will need to figure out before next season. Running up front over the last 10 races has been a lot of fun and you run with the guys that are in The Chase and winning races. I’m proud of The Home Depot Team, we didn’t give up when we fell back to 22nd in points and rallied to finish 16th. I am already looking forward to 2011.”

He did very much improve this season over his rookie season! So much for a sophmore slump…only didn’t get a win.
