Logano was scheduled to debut at Richmond last weekend, in the number 02 home depot Toyota. But as you know, it rained during qualifying last week at Richmond. And since the 02 car had no owner points, Joey had to go home. But this weekend, Joe Gibbs racing decided to to put Joey Logano in the number 96, to ensure that Joey would make the race, rain or shine. Joe Gibbs racing also brought over the home depot sponsorship to the number 96 car, previously sponsored by DLP.
In the practice sessions Joey struggled to get a handle on his number 96 Home Depot machine. But he wasn’t the only one as his team mate Kyle Busch, also struggled in the practice sessions. In a speed comparisons of the fastest laps run, Joey was only .1 second slower than current sprint cup leader and team mate Kyle Busch.
The qualifying session was rained out, but luckily for Joey Logano, he was in the number 96 car this weekend, that was locked in to the race, so the Middletown native, did not have to go home this weekend, and was able to make his NASCAR sprint cup debut.
At the end of the day, Joey would finish in the 32nd position. Although Joey was expecting more for his debut race in the sprint cup series, there are still some positive takeaways from the finish. First off all, Joey finished the race cleanly, and he gained alot of respect from his fellow competitors. And it is a step in the right direction.
Here is what Joe Gibbs had to say about Joey Logano’s debut, “He made every lap he could make, did the best he could, what has impressed me the most is when we don’t get something good going for us, I don’t care if its the Nationwide Series or today here, he gets the most that you can get out of it and doesn’t make big mistakes. I think that was a tough way for him to start. I wish we could have gotten him a better setup there.”
The next race for Joey Logano will be next week at Dover International Speedway, where he will be driving in the nationwide series. If you remember, Dover was where Joey made his first debut race in NASCAR. He went on to finish in the sixth position, and his teammate Denny Hamlin went on to win the race.
You can watch the Camping World RV Sales 200 live on ESPN 2, on Saturday September, 2008, starting at 3pm eastern time.
