Logano 2012 Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 Results

Post Race Highlights:

  • Logano qualified 10th earlier Saturday morning for the afternoon’s event. Logano was second-fastest in practice on Friday.
  • Logano and the Dollar General team had an up-and-down day early. Logano fell back as far as 12th, but was able to make up ground and get into the top-five by lap 50.
  • Logano had a strong restart around lap 56, getting up to the third position and riding in a podium spot until the handle started to go away on the No. 20 Toyota.
  • Crew chief Adam Stevens made a number of chassis adjustments all day long, adjusting air pressure, adding wedge and adjusting the track bar. Most of the afternoon, Logano fought a tight condition that wouldn’t allow the front of the car to turn.
  • Logano once again broke into the top-three on lap 114 before eventually falling back when the handle of the No. 20 started to go away with yet another tight condition.
  • The Dollar General team took four tires on a late-race pit stop hoping Logano would get a chance to use them. However, several other teams took just two tires and got track position, forcing Logano to fight through traffic.
  • Logano had a spirited battle with teammate Denny Hamlin over the race’s final few laps. Logano was able to hold off Hamlin and earned an eighth-place finish. It was Logano’s seventh top-10 finish in seven career NNS races at Phoenix Int’l Raceway.

Logano’s Post-Race Thoughts:

“I’m not really sure what happened with the Dollar General today. We had a strong car yesterday in practice and I thought we would have a shot to win the race. However, when the handle of the car went away today, none of the changes that we made really seemed to help it. The car would get better for a few laps and we would be strong in the early runs, but the longer we went, the same handling characteristics would come back and we would struggle like we didn’t even make any changes. It was frustrating, but then again, I know that I drove my heart out and we made some big swings at it. I also learned a lot for the Cup race on Sunday. I’m proud of the whole team and I think we’ll keep getting better and better all year. I’m ready to be back in the car at Bristol. I wish it was next week already. It’s going to be tough to watch these guys at Vegas.”

Joey Logano Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 Preview

No. 20 Dollar General Toyota News & Notes:

  • DOLLAR GENERAL TWO’FER: For the first time this season, the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry will carry the colors of new sponsor Dollar General this weekend in Phoenix. In fact, this weekend will mark the first of several events where Dollar General will have two Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas in the field, as Dollar General is also a full-season sponsor on the No. 11 of driver Brian Scott in the Nationwide Series. Dollar General will also sponsor JGR’s No. 18 in several NASCAR Nationwide Series events this season, as well as Joey Logano’s No. 20 Sprint Cup Series ride in 12 races.
  • MOMENTS FROM VICTORY IN DAYTONA: Logano and the rest of the NASCAR Nationwide Series made their season-debut last weekend at Daytona International Speedway and Logano found himself just yards from victory before getting involved in a last-lap multi-car accident. On the final lap, Logano found himself working with Trevor Bayne as the tandem was moving to the front on a final green-white-checkered run to the finish. Heading down the backstretch, Bayne had pushed Logano into the top-spot. In turn four, Logano and Bayne were forced to move up the track as the car underneath them moved up to block. As a result, Logano was spun from behind and slammed into the outside wall with the rest of the leaders. Logano was able to re-fire his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and drive across the finish line, coming home 16th.
  • PHOENIX VICTORY LANE STILL AWAITS LOGANO: While victory has eluded Logano at Phoenix International Raceway over the years in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, it’s been a good track for the 21-year-old. In six-career starts at the track, Logano has never finished outside of the top-10, including a near-race win in the spring race of 2010 when Logano found himself leading late, but contact with another car damaged the right front of his Toyota and forced him to slide through the field on a final race to the checkers. Logano’s last three finishes at Phoenix have been third, sixth and fourth. Logano also has two top-10 finishes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Phoenix.
  • IF YOU HAVEN’T YET, MEET ADAM STEVENS: For the second-straight year, 33-year-old Adam Stevens will serve as the crew chief for the No. 20 Toyota and driver Joey Logano. Before taking over the reins of the No. 20 last season, Stevens spent the previous six seasons as the race engineer for JGR’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series No. 20 Home Depot Toyota team. A native of Portsmouth, OH and graduate of Notre Dame High School, Stevens grew up racing dirt late models with his father in Ohio. Stevens worked on cars until he turned 16 and then got behind the wheel until he moved to North Carolina following his college graduation from Ohio University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Adam is married to his wife Aubrey and has one son, Carter, and another boy, Ryan, due in May.
  • NEW FACES, SAME OLD CREW: While a majority of the No. 20 Dollar General team is remaining the same, led by crew chief Adam Stevens, there are a couple of new faces on the crew heading into the new season. Heath Landis will serve as the team’s new car chief, coming over from Roush-Fenway Racing’s No. 60 Nationwide Series team. There are two new members on the over-the-wall pit crew as well. Joe Crossen will serve as the team’s new rear-tire changer and comes over from the No. 17 Roush-Fenway team, while Chris Taylor will be the new front-tire carrier and joins JGR from the No. 1 Earnhardt-Ganassi team. Rocky Ryan will serve as Joey’s spotter for the 2012 season. Ryan spent the last few years spotting for David Ragan.
  • THE RACE: The Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix Int’l Raceway (Avondale, AZ; 1-mile oval) is set for Saturday afternoon, March 3, 2012. The race will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. ET, with radio coverage on MRN

From the Cockpit:

Joey Logano Quotes: “I feel really confident going into Phoenix. The last few times we’ve been there, we’ve learned a lot about the track. We know some things we can do and things we can’t do with the car. Plus, Joe Gibbs Racing as an entire organization has made a ton of changes during the off-season and really worked hard to improve on the cars, especially on the mile and mile-and-a-half tracks. It will be nice to get back to a place like Phoenix where it is more about the car and handling than Daytona is. We all enjoy racing at Daytona, but when you get to Phoenix, you really feel like you are starting out the year and feel like you will get a good idea as to what you will have on the track.

“I’m pretty excited to have Dollar General on board for this weekend. This will be my first of many races with them this year on both the Nationwide Series and Cup Series sides. It’s big to have a company like Dollar General come on board with Joe Gibbs Racing and not with just one team, but on all three of our Nationwide Series cars during the year and with me in the Sprint Cup Series for a bunch of races. That tells a lot for our team, our drivers and our racing program. Hopefully we can get Dollar General a few wins this year, starting this weekend.”

From the Pit Box:

Adam Stevens Quotes: “Phoenix is still very new with the repave and that goes into your planning and preparation. Last time there in November we saw large balance changes through practice. This will likely be the trend again this time around. Track position beat tires late in the race because it’s really difficult to pass here. The racing groove didn’t open up much last time. This will get a little better every time we come back, but track position will be huge. The focus will be on getting a good starting spot and beating people off pit road this week.”

The Joe Gibbs Racing Machines:

  • PRIMARY CAR INFO: The Dollar General team will take chassis #132 to Phoenix. It raced last season at Loudon and Chicago.
  • BACK-UP CAR: Chassis #124 will serve as the team’s backup car.

Joey Logano Drive4COPD 300 at Daytona Results

Post Race Highlights:

  • Logano started the NASCAR Nationwide Series opener in the 22nd position.
  • Logano wasted little time moving into the top-10 by lap three and into the top-five just 20 laps into the event.
  • Like any restrictor-plate race, Logano found himself moving from front to back on multiple occasions; one lap finding himself in the top-five and the next lap running in the mid-20s.
  • The GameStop/Joe Gibbs Racing team had a great day in the pits, gaining spots on nearly every pitting occasion. During the middle portion of the event, Logano and the team took fuel only on several stops to keep track position.
  • During the race, Logano worked with a number of different drivers. Before the race, Logano had planned to work with defending Sprint Cup Series Champion Tony Stewart and got to the 33’s bumper for a number of laps. Logano also spent the day drafting with Kasey Kahne, JGR teammates Brian Scott and Denny Hamlin and Trevor Bayne.
  • As the race was coming to the conclusion, Logano was moving his way toward the front with the help of Kahne and missed a number of multi-car accidents. He nearly got involved in one of them, but made a great save despite getting run into right in the door. When the race came down to a green-white-checkered, Logano and Trevor Bayne decided to work together for the end.
  • On the final lap, the Logano and Bayne tandem was moving to the front. Heading down the backstretch, Bayne had pushed Logano into the top-spot. In turn four, Logano and Bayne were forced to move up the track as the car underneath them moved up to block. As a result, Logano was spun from behind and slammed into the outside wall with the rest of the leaders. Logano was able to re-fire his GameStop Toyota and drive across the finish line, coming home 16th.

Logano’s Post-Race Thoughts:

“Man, I thought I had that race won for sure. I have to thank Trevor (Bayne) for going with me there on those last couple of laps. It’s always hard to figure out exactly how the end of these races are going to play out and who you are going to work with. We had been working well with Tony (Stewart) and Kasey (Kahne) all day long, but the way we lined up for that last start, we were going to have to work with Trevor to get anything done and he gave me a great push over those last couple of laps.

“We got a great run going down the backstretch and we were catching Kurt (Busch) and Kyle (Busch) fast. Going into turn three, we had them and got the lead. I know that the 33 (Stewart) and someone else was coming, but Kurt started moving up the track to block and we had to move up as well. When we all got up to the wall, everyone just collided and it all broke loose from there. We were about two feet from having everything cleared. But we got hit the in left rear and turned around. When all was said and done, I was going to get that car fired up and drive it across the finish line. It was the least I could do for these guys on the GameStop team today. They gave me a great car and a car that should have won the race.

“Looking back at it, I wouldn’t do anything different. We made the right moves all day long and we put ourselves in a position to win the race. That is just what happens at these restrictor-plate tracks. You have everyone there at the end trying to get the right track position and make the right moves and all heck breaks loose. It’s too bad to see the GameStop Toyota get torn up today and all of those cars get torn up at the end. We could have all raced to the line and had a great finish. I’m disappointed we don’t have the trophy, but I know we had a car that could have and should have won today.”
