Joey Logano Subway Fresh Fit 500 Race Talk - Sunday, March 3, 2013
The Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway (1-mile tri-oval, Avondale, AZ)

No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Fusion driven by Joey Logano

Sunday, March 3, 3:00 pm ET

Primary Chassis: PRS-839
Brand new chassis for 2013
Backup Chassis: PRS-836
Brand new chassis for 2013

THE NEWS & NOTES
  • PHOENIX OWES HIM:: Joey Logano has had an up-and-down relationship with Phoenix International Raceway. Heading into last year’s penultimate event, Logano had finished in the top 11 in three of the last four races at Phoenix. During last year’s fall race, Logano was headed for a top-three run before he was caught up in the late-race accident between Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer, which unfortunately knocked Logano out of action.
  • TV STAR: During his time in Phoenix, Logano will be filming a commercial for NASCAR Nationwide Series sponsor Discount Tire, along with Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski, that will air nationally later this year. The Coca-Cola commercial featuring Logano debuted during the Daytona 500 to much fanfare.
  • BETTER THAN RESULTS: Logano finished Daytona with the 10th-best driver rating, which demonstrated how strong the Shell-Pennzoil team ran during the race. However, fuel pump issues and a lack of drafting partners over the race’s final laps kept Logano from a sure top-10 finish.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER THE FIRST GEN-6 RACE?

“I thought the race was good. It is very hard to tell at Daytona because the cars are always going to race different at the restrictor-plate tracks. I think once we get to Phoenix and Vegas we will see a better representation as to how these cars will handle and the racing they will put on. They look really cool for sure. Some of the coolest looking racecars out there now.”

ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR DAYTONA PERFORMANCE?

“I’m happy about the team’s performance for sure, but I’m not happy with the finish. It was just circumstances there though. We had a fast Shell-Pennzoil Ford and we were headed to the front there at the end of the race. We just lost our drafting partners and couldn’t get in the top line and fell back. But we were fast all weekend long and had good finishes. (Crew chief) Todd (Gordon) and myself had good communication and the team worked their butts off. Overall, I’m really happy with the weekend.”

Driver rating is an overall rating of a drivers performance. Things like laps led, passes made, spots lost, fast laps, whether they finish ahead of where they start, and where they finish. They use loop data and find an average giving different values to different variables. Example is Matt Kenseth, he led the most laps and was very fast at Daytona but never even finished the race but still ended up with the 3rd highest driver rating based on how solid his performance was.

I know it wasnt his fault. The gasman screwed up or he pulled out to early. He pitted with everyone else and ran out 4 laps earlier.

Unfortunately I predict a top 20 next week.

Yeah.Kevin Harvick can run out of gas early in the season. He will be in the Chase at the end of the year. Joey cant afford this.

Quote:“We are going to look into what happened to see if it was a fuel pickup problem or if we didn’t get all the fuel in the car that we thought we did on the last stop. It really came as a surprise to us. We thought we were good to go to the end. It’s a tough pill to swallow because we fought from behind all weekend long. This Shell-Pennzoil Ford deserved to be in the top 10 today. All we can do is learn and move forward.” – Joey Logano on running out of fuel toward the end of the race

“I’m really pleased with the way this team rebounded this weekend. We pretty much spotted the entire garage area a practice and qualifying session on Friday when we found a mechanical problem Friday night. We were behind the eight ball after that. But we didn’t get our heads down and we made the car better and it was good in the race. We just didn’t get the finish that we deserved for all of the hard work.” – Logano on the Phoenix weekend.
