Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway - Race Talk
Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway (1.5-mile oval, Joliet, Ill.)

No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Fusion driven by Joey Logano

Sunday, September 15, 2:00 pm ET

Primary Chassis: PRS-863
Last Raced: Brand new chassis
Backup Chassis: PRS-839
Last Raced: Backup at several races (not raced)

THE NEWS & NOTES
  • CHASE BOUND: Despite the struggles of a 22nd-place finish last weekend at Richmond, Joey Logano and the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil team locked themselves into the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase. Logano ended the season 10th in the point standings. Because he was in the top 10 at the end of the “regular season,” Logano can utilize the three bonus points from his win in August at Michigan and is seeded sixth as the point standings reset heading into the Chicagoland weekend.
  • SECOND YOUNGEST: At age 23, Logano will be the second-youngest driver to ever compete in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Kyle Busch was 22 when he qualified for the Chase back in 2006.
  • DOUBLE DUTY: Logano will be doing double duty this weekend, competing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event in the No. 22 Penske Racing machine. The No. 22 team has won seven of the last 12 races and leads the Nationwide Series Owner’s Championship point standings.
  • CHASE ACROSS THE COUNTRY: Qualifying for the Chase translates into a big week for Logano. He will travel to New Hampshire to take part in the Chase Across America events on Wednesday, September 11, as he will tour an National Guard base and participate in a fan Q&A session. Logano will then take part in a number of activities in Chicago on Thursday, including the NASCAR Contenders Live event in the Grand Ballroom at Chicago’s Navy Pier.
  • SPECIAL LOGO ON 22: The No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Fusion will be carrying a special logo on the deck lid this weekend at Chicagoland. The logo highlights the upcoming Manufacturing Day on Friday, October 4. Manufacturing Day is an occasion during which U.S. manufacturers open their doors to demonstrate the potential of modern manufacturing and to foster interest in manufacturing careers. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO MAKE THE CHASE?

“Like I said Saturday night, it feels like a huge weight was lifted off of my shoulders. The four races or so leading into Richmond were pretty stressful to say the least. So to have that behind us now and to be able to focus on the next 10 races is good. I feel like we don’t have to worry about points and don’t have to worry about racing other cars – we just have to worry about doing our thing. It does feel pretty good to be in the Chase. That’s a testament to this team.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR CHANCES ARE IN THE CHASE? YOUR TEAMMATE SAID YOU SHOULD BE A FAVORITE.

“I try to not listen to what everyone else is saying, but I think it really says something about our team that Brad (Keselowski) would say that about this Shell-Pennzoil team. We are going to go out there and try to run as solidly as we have been running the last several months. But I think we are legitimate contenders. I think we have as good of a shot as anyone. We are running really strong right now. If we can keep it up, we can win this Championship for sure. We have 10 races to prove it.”

The key for Joey's chase is how he does on the mile and a half tracks and if he can continue is usual good runs at Talledega. Joey's got a shot at this no doubt.

Yup.....long, disappointing night,,,,,Joey started with a Bang but those darned motors.....lost another one. It would have to be Kenseth,,,,,grrrrrrr,,,,,,at least Kyle and Brad and Bowyer gave me a fair set of points for the Race game I am in. Forget Joey,,,and Wise,,,,,I knew he wouldn't do much but he was my bottom feeder choice....gws

Yeah, thats the 2nd rain race Joey came in 3rd at red flag only to lose a motor. Thats the problrm as well with Joey, his bad finishes are awful. Not his fault just saying. 52 points, thats going to be tough with 9 to go. I am glsss half full but he needs basically all top 5 sprinkled with 2 wins. He can do it

I said rutt row, with that rain delay, I knew the exact same things was going to happen as the race earlier in the year and it did. I hope Ford is looking into that. Not good.

Engines blowing up do not make Chase champions (as much as I hate the chase, but thats the game they are playing right now).

RE: Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway - Race Talk
I think we need to make sure you manage our expectations correctly. BK didn't win the championship his first year in the chase and Joey probably wont either. Jimmie Johnson came back from a hole...Joey is not Jimmie Johnson....not yet anyway. The biggest thing we need to be proud of is simply Joey being in the chase. He has got over that hurdle. Its progession..Joey will be a champion one year...not this year. Hey, if i'm wrong i'm wrong and this is certainly a time when i want to be wrong but i think right now we should all just be happy with what Joey Logano has accomplished this year and notice the massive steps he has taken

Don't get me wrong, he deserves everything he has gotten and more. I am not picking on him at all, I am saying an identical situation, with rain/engines, is not good. Go Joey Go...and he no doubt will win a Championship sooner than later, I have always believed!
