*For anyone who has not heard yet* NASCAR changes its green-white-checkered rule
NASCAR made it official today -- the green-white-checkered rule designed to avoid finishes under caution is getting a serious tweak.

Until today the rules allowed for just one attempt at a green-white-checkered finish. Now, a maximum of three attempts will be allowed.

It used to be that if a caution came out five laps from the end of the race, cars would drive around for five laps behind the pace car and the leader when the caution came out was declared the winner. But that was way too boring and anticlimactic.

So NASCAR came up with the green-white-checkered rule. Instead of ending a race with five laps of caution, two laps were added to the end of the race. On the restart, the field would take the green flag, come around for one lap, take the white flag, then come around on the final lap to the checkered flag.

The problem with that was that if another wreck occurred on those last two laps, the race once again would end with a yellow flag. That's what happened in last Saturday's Bud Shootout.

The change made today means that if a caution comes out on the first lap of the green-white-checkered -- before the leader takes the white flag -- NASCAR will try again, up to three times.

It won't guarantee that a race will never end under the yellow flag, but it will make it a lot less likely.

Yeah, still not sure about my thoughts on this.

Yay that just made me really happy! I hated how the races would still end under caution pretty often.

Ohhh. That's really interesting.
I think the only way to tell if it'll be good or not is to test it out and see how it is in practice.
Not sure how I feel about this just yet. Good in theory though.

Agreed. It seems as though NASCAR is setting themselves up for many more crashes (as we've already seen with bump drafting, etc.) and that's not good. I know it boosts ratings and fans opinions but they also have to think about the drivers saftey as well. And in some cases the fans safety too refering to Carl Edwards' crash last year where fans were injured.

The cars, tracks equipment is much safer and therefore i'm fine with it. It adds excitment. Nascar is an entertainment business and the have to keep all fans tuned in not just us super hardcore ones. Since 2001 Nascar has went about 10 steps towards safety now were going about 5 the other way. It will be fine. Danger is part of the appeal.
