AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway - Race Talk
AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway (one-mile oval; Avondale, Arizona)

No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Fusion driven by Joey Logano

Sunday, November 10, 3:00 pm ET

Primary Chassis: PRS-863
Last Raced: Chicagoland (won pole; finished 37th)
Backup Chassis: PRS-848
Last Raced: Loudon (finished 14th)

THE NEWS & NOTES
  • SPEAKING ENGAGEMENT: Joey Logano’s third-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway Sunday allowed him to move up two positions in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings to ninth place. With his current spot in the standings, Logano put himself in position to be one of the 10 drivers that will address the crowd at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Banquet in Las Vegas.
  • EXCLUSIVE COMPANY: With Logano’s third-place effort last weekend, the 23-year-old earned his 11th top-five finish of the season. Only two other drivers – points leader Jimmie Johnson and multiple-race winner Kyle Busch – have earned more top-five finishes this season than Logano.
  • RUNNING BETTER THAN EVER: Another amazing stat from Logano’s breakout 2013 season: the first-year Penske Racing driver has scored his career-best finish at eight different tracks this season. Logano’s 2013 finishes at Atlanta, California, Bristol, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Richmond and Texas have all bested his previous-best results entering this year.
  • CAREER-BESTS CONTINUE: Coming into the season, Logano’s previous season-best for top-10 finishes was 16, which he achieved in 2010. Following Texas, Logano established a new career-best 17 top-10 finishes in 2013.
  • QUICK VEGAS TRIP: Following Texas, Logano made a quick trip to Las Vegas to speak on behalf of Pennzoil at a company dinner at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, where Pennzoil was showcasing several exciting new products.
  • RACER’S DREAM GARAGE CALENDAR: The 2014 Racer’s Dream Garage presented by Shell V-Power calendar is now available. The calendar showcases drivers like Logano, Brad Keselowski, Travis Pastrana, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Greg Biffle, Helio Castroneves and several others along with their personal street vehicles. Several fans’ cars are also featured as part of the Shell Ultimate Enthusiast contest. Fan can get the calendar on the Shell-Pennzoil merchandise hauler, at the Penske Racing gift shop or by ordering it online at http://www.joeyloganofoundation.org or http://www.penskeracing.com.

ARE YOU SAD TO BE ENTERING THE FINAL RACES OF 2013?

“In a way I am, in other ways, I’d like it to keep on going. I’m a racer and I like to race. When the off-season comes around, I’m good for a couple of weeks and then I’m ready to get back in a racecar and race. That’s what I like to do and that what I want to do. There isn’t much other than racing for me. So a couple of weeks off is plenty. But I know the guys on the team like to recharge and I’m looking forward to starting 2014 already with the type of year we’ve had and having a full year with (crew chief) Todd (Gordon) under my belt.”

HOW MUCH DOES IT HELP HAVING A NOTEBOOK TO REFERENCE WITH TODD GORDON WHEN YOU COME BACK TO A TRACK?

“It’s huge. When you come to a track together for the first time, you don’t know how he likes to set up the car. He doesn’t know what kind of adjustments that you like. You don’t know exactly how to explain the car’s handling to him. When you do it once and you come back a second time, you have all those notes and you know where you are going to start. That is why we have seemed to click so well going back to these places a second time. That’s a huge advantage, especially working together for the first time.”

Saw some of the practice session today and Joey was looking really good, but as Martin Truex put it, the track conditions change radically at Phoenix so Todd and crew will have their hands full matching the car to the track for Joey. Hopefully Brad in the 22 on saturdays race will give them some useful information too. Best of luck sunday to Joey and the team.

Wow is all I can say. I've been watching racing for a long time and I don't think I've seen a more confusing, messed up can of worms race than that. But a great job Joey, another top 10 for you and your crew. And a fantastic job handling the car in the crazed looking traffic you kept being in the middle of. Really, a hats off to all the drivers this afternoon for there not being alot more serious wrecks. On to FL next week, a last weekend but a very busy one. Hope all of you at Penske have a good week and a safe trip.

I agree with the above assements of todays race. I have been watching for a long time..and I was confused as heck as to what was going on. I am happy with the insanity of the race today that he ended up where he did. As par for the course of this year, he raced his butt off, and no change in points...

RE: AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway - Race Talk
That is what I've been feeling most of the season, I think. Joey and crew coming back again and again and seemingly not getting ahead as much as we'd like. However, that isn't a reflection of Joey, the team, or NASCAR as a whole...more it just shows how close these drivers, teams, and equipment are. Just my thoughts of course. What has me so amazed is our driver's ability to run door to door with the best in the world for one of the most storied teams in racing... and BE there at the end of it all, top 10 and a whole race car. Cannot say enough. And the to the JLF, fantastic job all of you. Proud to be a fan.
