RE: AAA Texas 500 - November 4, 2012 - Texas Motor Speedway Race Talk
Quote:Joey Logano Quotes: “We have three races to go and three races to try and wrap up the season with some good finishes. We have three really different styles of tracks coming up on the schedule and I think we have the opportunity to be good on all of them. Our biggest issue right now is being able to start the race better. We’ve been in this slump where we are just a little bit off at the beginning and by the end of the race, the car is fast and as fast as the leaders. We need to get the speed early and work on making it better. I think we can do it and it would be great to wrap up the year with all of the Home Depot guys with three really good finishes and maybe even another win.

“Texas is a fast, fast track. A lot of people say it looks like Atlanta and Charlotte and in appearance it does somewhat. But it’s a lot different as far as setup and driving style. The speeds are so great getting into the corners at Texas. And there are a lot of bumps that you have to deal with, which can make handling a premium. When you bury the car down there in the corner at those high speeds and hit the bumps and your car isn’t handling just quite right, it really makes you take notice. And the speeds really make this track aero dependant. We can get strung out and have a lot of green flag racing like we had there in the spring race. That means green-flag stops and that means less chances to make big changes to your car. So get it right early and you have the best shot at a good finish.”

Quote:How did your car handle in qualifying?

“This was a good improvement for our RedBeacon.com Camry. The guys did a good job finding some speed in it and changing some things up on it. They were able to give me what I needed there. We’re a lot closer now than we were at the end of practice. All the guys worked hard for me and we’ll have a good starting spot here on Sunday.”

How do you expect your car to be in the race?

“We’ll see — we only made a couple race runs today. I think the track is going to be quite a bit different tomorrow and we have some package changes that we want to make to see where we’re going to be. We didn’t feel like we’re where we needed to be in race trim so we’re just going to step back, reload and try something else.”

Quote:Logano’s Post-Race Thoughts:

“That was a solid day for our Home Depot Toyota. I feel like we finished about where we should have. I think we could have maybe finished a couple of spots better, but we were a seventh to 11th place car out there tonight. But I also think we were only a tenth of a second or so off from being a top-five car. We just lost the handle when the sun went down and couldn’t really get it back. The car was just way too loose there at the end and even when we did everything to tighten it up, we just couldn’t get it to where I could really hustle the car.

“We lost some track position there when we fell from about eighth to 14th or 15th. I don’t know if we had a bad set of tires or if one of the tires equalized or what, but we lost that track position and it is really hard to get back at a place like this. This place is all about the aero and it’s hard to pass. Once we got the car better, we were able to make up some of those spots. I feel pretty positive about that. And then on the last lap, we just got run into and it put a hole in the left rear. Thankfully the tire didn’t go down all the way and we were able to get it home 11th.”
